SimplyCats: How long is 9 Lives PDF Print E-mail

Today cats can live longer than ever and if you look back 15 to 20 years ago the life expectancy of a cat would probably be 4 to 6-year-old,  today many cats live 15 years and above. Life expectancy can depend on many things but probably the most critical is whether the cat is an indoor or outdoor cat.

Indoor cats often live from 12 to 18 years of age and in fact some live up to the age of 28 which is one of the oldest we have ever known.

However on average outdoor cats generally only live to around 4 to 5 years of age. They generally die due to trauma that is being hit by a car or attacked by dogs. Outdoor cat are also much more  susceptible to many viruses that can be spread by fighting between cats and also the fact that the outdoor cat is mixing with many unvaccinated cats.

However remember you can make a big difference to keeping your pet healthy by feeding a good nutritious diet keeping an up-to-date with the vaccinations and having at least an annual health check. The cat should also be regularly wormed and treat for fleas. This is especially important in the outdoor cat.

Finally we like to emphasise the importance of having your cat insured. The rates for cat insurance are relatively low compared to dogs as they are smaller and on the whole need less expensive veterinary treatment. Thus often for a low sum per month of say £7-£15 you can get quite extensive veterinary and third-party cover for your cat. After years of experience we recommend pet plan to all our clients as we find their policies very good value for money.
